Nearly 300 people turned out to apply for jobs with R.J. Corman Railroad Group at the latest job fair hosted by Hiring Our Miners Everyday (H.O.M.E.). It was the largest group ever to attend a Kentucky Career Center JobSight job fair.
Robert Freyer traveled from Harlan County to attend the event, held Feb. 26 at the Kentucky Career Center JobSight in Hazard.
Robert has relied on unemployment insurance and part-time work in the retail sector since his layoff from Alpha Natural Resources in September 2012. He heard about the R.J. Corman job fair through a posting at the unemployment office in Harlan.
“I’m interested, and have experience with heavy equipment,” he said, adding he is hopeful his experience will help him land a full-time job.
RJ Corman officials expect to fill at least 40 positions from this week’s job fair, including general laborers, heavy equipment operators, and mechanics.
The R.J. Corman job fair marked the sixth H.O.M.E. job fair with nearly 1,000 people attending to apply for jobs.
H.O.M.E. is a service of the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (EKCEP) in conjunction with the Kentucky Career Center JobSight network. EKCEP provides federally funded jobseeker and employer services in 23 counties in the Appalachian Kentucky coalfields.
H.O.M.E. helps out-of-work miners and their spouses discover their skills, determine new career options, covers costs for them to enter classroom training, and helps place them into subsidized on-the-job training positions with area employers.
The program is also creating partnerships with employers and organizations across Kentucky and other states to help miners find and land jobs that allow them to sustain their standard of living and continue to use their skills.
In these cases, H.O.M.E. can also provide limited relocation assistance to miners who accept out-of-area job opportunities.
The program is funded through a $5.2 million National Emergency Grant (NEG) from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration.
