PIKEVILLE – Chris Cantino of the University of Pikeville men’s basketball team posted his seventh and eighth double-doubles of the season to earn Mid-South Conference Player of the Week, league officials announced on Monday.
The weekly honor is the first this season for the top-ranked Bears who improved to 14-1 overall and 5-0 in the MSC with double-digit wins over Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) and Cumberland (Tenn,) last week.
Cantino, a junior from Philadelphia, Pa., in his first season at UPIKE, scored a season-high 27 points with 14 rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks in the 70-52 win over Lindsey Wilson on Thursday. Cantino hit 9-of-10 shots from the free-throw line against the Blue Raiders.
In Saturday’s 82-68 decision over Cumberland, Cantino added 22 points and 10 rebounds to his week with two steals and a block. The 6-8 forward missed just one shot from the field, going 9-for-10 and 4-of-6 from the stripe.
Cantino ranks No. 1 in the NAIA in offensive rebounds per game (5.5) and is fifth nationally in total boards with 155. He is also seventh in rebounds per game (10.3) and ninth in field-goal percentage (59.6).
UPIKE will return to action at 8 p.m. on Thursday at No. 13 Georgetown (Ky.).
