PRESTONSBURG - Host Prestonsburg finished runner-up to 15th Region rival Shelby Valley in the Hi-Tech Signs and Graphix Holiday Classic. The tournament, in its second year, featured teams from the 14th, 15th and 16th regions. Former state champion Shelby Valley, under the guidance of first-year head coach Jim Hicks, defeated Prestonsburg 69-45 in the tournament’s title game Sunday evening.
Prior to falling to Shelby Valley in the championship contest, James DeRossett-coached Prestonsburg posted back-to-back wins earlier in the tournament.
Prestonsburg rolled past Piarist School on Friday, Dec. 20, routing the Knights 80-31. In other opening round games it was Shelby Valley 74, Elliott County 55; Allen Central 56, June Buchanan 47 and Magoffin County 72, Lee County 56.
Prestonsburg managed to edge much-improved Magoffin County in the second round, slipping past the Hornets 76-74.
Other results from the second round of the tournament were Shelby Valley 60, Allen Central 33; Elliott County 67, June Buchanan 62 and Lee County 100, Piarist School 68.
Magoffin County defeated June Buchanan 75-55, Elliott County distanced itself to win 82-60 over Lee County and Allen Central toppled Piarist 85-50 in the final round.
Prestonsburg will meet Southwestern in the opening round of the Lake Cumberland Holiday Classic in Pulaski County on Friday.
Tip-off for the Prestonsburg-Southwestern boys’ basketball game is set for 6:45 p.m.
Girls’ Basketball - P’burg Holiday Classic: The Prestonsburg girls’ basketball program is hosting the Prestonsburg Holiday Classic this weekend. Wolfe County, Menifee County, Pike County Central, South Floyd, Berea and Sheldon Clark are all in the field for the Prestonsburg holiday tournament.
