PRESTONSBURG - Host Prestonsburg nearly knocked off Sheldon Clark, last season’s 15th Region runner-up, over the weekend. The Blackcats, under the direction of head coach James DeRossett, lost an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter as Sheldon Clark ended the game on a 20-10 run to win 64-62.
Junior guard Chase Parsley paced Frankie Smith-coached Sheldon Clark with 21 points. Freshman guard Dylan James scored 20 points and junior guard Trevor Blackburn added 12 for the Blackcats.
Sheldon Clark led at the end of three different quarters. The Cardinals outscored Prestonsburg 15-11 in the first quarter and led 32-62 at intermission.
In one of its best single-quarter performances of the season, Prestonsburg outscored Sheldon Clark 26-12 in the third quarter.
Sheldon Clark, however, managed to finish strong. Prestonsburg was limited offensively throughout the final quarter.
Heath Maynard netted six points, Ethan Osborne scored three and Eric Sartin tossed in two for the Cardinals, who were six of 11 from the foul line.
Sophomore forward Dalton Frasure led Prestonsburg with a game-high 23 points. Jarin Hall scored 17 points and Jarred Jarrell added 14 for the Blackcats.
Stapleton and Foley rounded out the Prestonsburg scoring, finishing with five and three points, respectively.
Prestonsburg was 19 of 26 from the foul line.
The Blackcats and Cardinals are not scheduled to meet again this season.
