DWALE — A fire which broke out Wednesday morning continued to burn for much of the day, destroying a landmark home along U.S. 23.
The home, stretching along the ridge overlooking Dwale, was recently purchased by Dr. Timothy Lavender and his wife. The couple had been living there for a little over a month, neighbors said.
Four fire departments battled the blaze for hours, but were hindered by the lack of a nearby fire hydrant. As a result, as fire trucks ran out of water, they had to wind their way back downhill to the main road, where the nearest hydrant was located.
The fire began in the pool area, but slowly engulfed the entire residence.
The Lavenders were not injured in the blaze.
