PRESTONSBURG — Saturday morning, when most people are just starting to get over the Thanksgiving feast bloat, up to a 100 or more locals will be running through the city to give a little help to those needing it the most.
Highlands Cancer Center and the Cancer Angels Network are sponsoring the first Cancer Angels 5K Run, Walk or Crawl. The event will raise money to purchase gas cards for cancer patients.
According to Tim VanDine, one of the organizers of the event, the American Cancer Society used to provide gas cards for cancer patients, to help defray transporation costs of getting treatment. Without the cards, some patients would have to postpone treatments until they could save up money.
But ACS has discontinued its gas card program, so VanDine says this weekend’s race will raise money to step in and fill that need. He said Speedway has offered to sell gas cards at a discount, to help the groups get the most bang for their buck.
Registration for the race will begin at 9 a.m., Saturday, in downtown Prestonsburg, near the water fountain and mural at the corner of South Lake Drive and Court Street. Speakers will address the crowd beginning at 9:30, and the race will begin at 10 a.m.
Registration for the event is $25 per person, or $95 for groups of seven or less.
