Jr. Pro Maranda Finney uses voice to aid wounded warriors

PRESTONSBURG – A young lady with eye for philanthropy will be among those singing in the season later this month with Billie Jean Osborne’s Kentucky Opry.

Maranda Finney, 15, of Hager Hill, a vocalist for the Junior Pros, is in her fourth year singing with the group. Maranda got her start when she was 9 years old, after being called to fill in for an ailing vocalist.

Maranda says she started singing “This Little Light of Mine” at church when she was 3, and from there she took voice lessons at the Mountain Arts Center.

“Dad likes to take me to singing competitions, and I like competing and meeting new people,” Maranda says. “The Junior Pros allow me to sing on a large stage with a live band, it has been an incredible learning experience.”

Maranda is a daughter of John Finney and Dr. Angela Maggard, and has siblings Jack, Conner and Ryan Finney, all of whom are fiddlers in the Junior Opry. Maranda recently won Tennessee country and gospel entertainer of the year, vocalist of the year and video of the year during the recent GCGMA/TCGMA competition.

Maranda, a sophomore at Johnson Central High School, says that when she isn’t singing, she enjoys playing piano, violin, high school choir, swim team, pep team and hanging out with her friends.

Maranda’s true passion lets her use her voice to help wounded veterans. During this year’s Christmas shows she will be offering a Christmas CD with proceeds going to help purchase Track Chairs for four wounded warriors.

“Six warriors have been approved to get chairs in the state of Kentucky, and the cost to outfit all six wounded warriors will be 90,000 dollars,” says Maranda. “I thinks with the help of the community this goal can be met.”

A check for the funds raised will be presented before the Dec. 21 Christmas show.

Maranda will be on stage beginning Nov. 29 for the Mountain Arts Center’s presentation of Billie Jean’s Kentucky Opry Christmas. Tickets are now on sale at the ticket office, or can be ordered online at www.macarts.com.
