Youngest Jr. Pro lending voice to Christmas show

November 5, 2013

PRESTONSBURG – There will be a big voice in a little package at the Mountain Arts Center this weekend, as Emma Claire Slone, the Kentucky Opry Junior Pros’ youngest member, joins her fellows on stage for Billie Jean Osborne’s Kentucky Opry Christmas.

Slone, 9, of Staffordsville, is in her first year with the Junior Pros. She is the daughter of Kerry and Chris Slone, and has one brother, Preston.

Emma says she began singing at home and in church since she was a little girl. “Ever since I was little, I’ve just loved singing,” says Emma. Chris Slone says that Emma is singing noon and night around there home.

“She never hushes. She is always singing,” says Chris. “If you call the house, you can hear her singing in the background.”

A student at Highland Elementary, Emma is a cheerleader for the school, and says that her favorite subject in school is math.

“Right now I like math. I think it’s a lot of fun.”

Inspiration comes from a lot of places for the young up-and-comer, and Emma says that some of her favorite singers are Carrie Underwood, and Adele; but her true love is folk, folk rock, and pop.

“I love Janis Joplin. I love singing ’Me and Bobby McGee,’” says Emma. “I really like old, bluesy music.”

She admits that she never really sang country music before joining the Junior Pros, but that she loves singing with the group, and learning about different types of music.

Emma has been making live appearances for the last several years, and placed first at the 2012 Apple Idol contest.

The Kentucky Opry Junior Pros will open up Friday night at the MAC for Billie Jean Osborne’s Kentucky Opry Christmas. Additional performance dates of the Christmas show are scheduled for December 7, 13, 14, 15, 20 and 21. Tickets are on sale now at the ticket office.
