Trick-or-treat to take place Thursday

October 25, 2013

PRESTONSBURG — Ghosts and goblins, witches and wizards, superheros and more will take to the streets next Thursday as the city of Prestonsburg hosts Halloween night trick-or-treating.

Trick-or-Treating in Prestonsburg will take place next Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, is a yearly celebration observed in many countries on Oct. 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast All Hallows’ Day.

Halloween customs are thought to have been influenced by Christian dogma and practices derived from it. Halloween falls on the evening before the Christian holy days of All Hallows’ Day on Nov. 1 and All Souls’ Day on Nov. 2, thus giving the holiday on Oct. 31 the full name of All Hallows’ Eve. These three days are referred to as Hallomas, a time dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs and all the faithful departed believers, though in modern times the festival has become a lighter affair aimed at children.

The first mass-produced Halloween costumes appeared in stores in the 1930s when trick-or-treating became popular in the United States.

During next Thursday’s trick-or-treating, Prestonsburg fire and police departments will once again be out to help ensure the safety of the trick-or-treaters as they cross busy intersections.
