PAINTSVILLE - The Prestonsburg Lady Blackcats avoided an upset bid from host Johnson Central in the opening round of the 57th District Girls’ Soccer Tournament, defeating the Lady Eagles 4-1 at Golden Eagle Field on Tuesday.
“This was a big win for us tonight since we lost to Johnson Central on this field a couple of weeks ago,” Prestonsburg Coach Scott Porter commented. “It was a complete team effort tonight as three of our four goals were assisted and the defense with sophomore keeper Maddy Ousley only gave up 1 goal that was a deflection off one of our players.”
The win guaranteed the Lady Blackcats a spot in the 15th Region Soccer Tournament for the third straight year. Depending on the outcome of the championship game, Prestonsburg will face either Belfry or Pikeville.
“We will have our hands full playing against Lawrence County in the district championship Thursday night but they seem to bring out the best in our girls,” Porter added. “We also want to thank everyone in the community and at Prestonsburg High School for their support this season. We have drawn the biggest game crowds that I have seen over the past four years.”
In the play-in game of the district tournament on Monday, Sheldon Clark edged Paintsville 1-0.
In the postseason match pitting the Lady Blackcats against Johnson Central, Carly Burchett paced the Prestonsburg girls’ soccer team with two goals. Hannah Little and Katie Porter chipped in one goal apiece for the Lady Blackcats.
Porter, Jackie Kidd and Alexis Younce added one goal each for Prestonsburg in the postseason win.
Prestonsburg goalkeeper Maddy Ousley played very well, limiting Johnson Central to only one goal. Ousley ranks as one of the top girls’ high school soccer goalies.
Prestonsburg advanced to play Lawrence County in the district championship game. The two familiar foes rank 1-2 in the current 15th Region girls’ soccer standings.
Reigning district champion Lawrence County blanked Sheldon Clark earlier on Tuesday, defeating the Lady Cardinals 8-0.
Results from the district championship game were unavailable at press time. Both Prestonsburg and Lawrence County advance to the 15th Region Tournament.
Boys’ Soccer: The Prestonsburg boys’ soccer team’s season ended with a loss to Paintsville in the 576th District Tournament on Monday. Paintsville edged the Blackcats 2-1 to advance to meet Johnson Central in the championship game. Prestonsburg finished the season 6-11.
Johnson Central captured the 57th District boys’ soccer title on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles beat crosstown rival Paintsville 3-1 in the district title game.
