CAMPBELLSVILLE – One tournament is down for the University of Pikeville women’s bowling team and one championship is won, as the Bears knocked down 7,068 total pins at the fifth annual Green River Classic hosted by Campbellsville (Ky.) at Phillips Lanes.

Helping the Bears be the only team to break 7,000 was Katelyn Simpson, earning the individual title with 1,043 total pins, edging Bellarmine’s (Ky.) Megan Szczepanski by five. Simpson made her way towards the win after tallying a 244 in the fourth game, which she needed after closing with a 177.

Her teammate Brianna Larson was close behind in third with a 1,021 and Alexis Vescovo (969), Fallon Tallman (964) and Kara Crowe (947) all finished in the top 10 in sixth, seventh and ninth place, respectively.

UPIKE finished in first over 200 pins ahead of its closest competitor. Emmanuel College took second place with a team score of 6,805 and the UPIKE junior-varsity team rounded out the top three with 6,604 pins.

Pikeville also had another junior varsity squad in the top 10, finishing eighth with a score of 6,169.

While the Bears had just a two-pin lead over Emmanuel after Saturday’s individual scores, it won convincingly in Sunday’s Baker games. UPIKE, led by an incredible 274 in its eighth game, won the Baker round by nearly 200 pins, beating Cumberlands (Ky.) 2,298-2,129.

Simpson’s 244 was the second highest game of the tournament as Szczepanski tallied the high game with a 245 in her second attempt on Saturday.

Also in the top-25 overall for the Bears was Cortni Marker in 13th place with 915 pins and Jenna Grandy in 16th with 901.

Pikeville will return to the lanes on Oct. 19-20 at the Orange & Black Classic in Dayton, Ohio.
