Flea market, Arts & Crafts Show
The Boone County Fair Fall and Early Christmas Arts & Crafts Show and Fall Flea Market will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at Madison Civic Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a hot dog and bake sale during this time. Foster community yard sales
Foster community yard sales will be this Saturday, Oct. 5th, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Each home will put own sign out. Hotdogs will be sold on Left Fork of Foster Hollow.
Public Service Announcement
The Food Handlers Classes will be held at the Public Health Building located near Danville, WV just off the Lick Creek Road.
Dates and times are as follows: Monday-October 7, 2013-2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Please note that under State Law any person(s) that is involved in the preparation or service of food for public consumption is required to attend a certified food service training course.
The course will be conducted by Sandra Giles, Boone County Sanitarians.
Secret Santa Program
The Boone County Community Organization (BCCO) is currently taking applications for the Secret Santa Program.
In order to apply you must come to the BCCO office, located at 347 Kenmore Drive, Lick Creek Road, in Danville, behind the Health Department.
You are eligible to receive Secret Santa if you receive any amount of food stamps and your children are 12 and under. Please be sure to bring your food stamp card and Social Security numbers for yourself and your children.
Last date for applications is Nov. 8, 2013.

The Washington District Senior League
The Washington District Senior League will be holding sign up and draft for new players on Tuesday October 15, 2013 at Jeffery Spencer Grade School. Sign up will begin at 6:00 and drafting will begin at 7:00. This league is for players from the 7th through 12th grade. Player must be born after August 1, 1994. If a player turns 19 before August 1, 2013 he or she will not be eligible to play. Draftees need to bring a copy of your birth certificate. The registration fee is $25.00 for the first child or $35.00 per household if there is more than one child. The fee covers the cost of playing shirts and insurance and should be paid that night. Practice will begin the following week. There will be a second draft this year on Thursday November 21, 2013 to pick up the players who may not make the school teams. New this year if you are a returning player and would like to go back into the draft to change teams that will be permitted this year only. Once you draft you cannot go back to your original team. All games will be played at Madison Civic Center and season will begin on December 4, 2013. Games will be on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings. Local student could win college money
Commander Glen Alkier of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #5578 announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary “Patriots Pen Essay Competition.
Middle school students in grades 6-8 in this area have the opportunity to compete in the VFW’s annual essay competition and win thousands of dollars.
Students begin by competing at the local Post level. Post winners advance to District. District winners compete in the state competition. The state winners compete for $46,000 in awards, and the first place winner wins $5,000. Each year, around 126,000 students participate nationwide.
Students are invited to write a 300-400-word essay on patriotic theme. The theme for 2012-2013, which is the 18th year of the contest is: “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers.”

Local student could win a trip and scholarship
Commander Glen Alkier of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #5578 announced the kick-off of the 66th year of the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition.
Local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C.
Students begin by competing at the local Post level with a deadline of Nov. 1, 2013. Post winners advance to District and then the first place District winner advances to the state competition. All state winner receive a four day trip to Washington, D.C. A total of $152,000 is awarded to national finalists. First place is $30,000. Annually the VFW provides more than $2.3 million in scholarships. Each year, around 50,000 students participate in the competition.
Students must wire and record a three-to-five minute essay on this theme for 2012-2013, “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?” on an audio cassette tape or audio CD and present their recording, typed essay and entry form at their local VFW Post.

Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program
The Boone County Community Organization through the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program has received $20 vouchers for fruits and vegetables.
To be eligible to receive coupons you must be at least 60 years of age and have a photo ID and meet income guidelines.
The income guidelines are household of one, $1,772 monthly; household of two $2,392; household of three $3,011; household of four $3,631; and household of five $4,251. All before taxes.
BCCO staff started taking applications beginning Monday through Friday at the Boone County office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Coupons must be spent by Oct. 31, 2013.

Each year, the West Virginia Division of Labor is required by statute to investigate and determine the prevailing hourly rate of wages that must be paid to the various classifications of workmen and mechanics that are utilized by contractors that perform construction or maintenance work on public improvements as defined by West Virginia Code 21-5A-1(4).
Anyone who is interested in participating in theis important process should contact the West Virginia Division of Labor at (304)558-7890, extension 10474 to request a survey form. For those that would prefer to submit their information electronically, an online form is available on the Division of Labor’s website @ www.wvlabor.org.
Participation in this process is not mandatory, however, this office request that you complete the survey forms and return them no later than October 11, 2013.
Please complete the survey forms according to the accompanying instructions. Any information submitted after that date will not be considered for the 2014 Prevailing Wage promulgation.
