GEORGETOWN – Led by Casey Castle’s first-round 73 (35-38), the University of Pikeville men’s golf team was in a tie for fifth place overall after day one of the Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament on Monday at the Cherry Blossom Golf & Country Club.
Castle tied for 12th place on the leaderboard with his one-over par round, Timmy Miller posted the next best score with a 74 (37-37) to tie for 15th.
Cumberland (Tenn.) was the team leader heading into Tuesday’s final 18 holes, carding 283 total strokes, followed by Cumberlands (Ky.) in second with 289 and Lindsey Wilson in third place with a 292. The Bears wrapped up their first round with 302 total strokes, tied with Asbury (Ky.) and one behind Campbellsville (Ky.).
Playing outside of UPIKE’s top five, Samuel McGuire matched Castle’s score with a 73 (36-37), but his score did not count for the Bears’ team total.
Other UPIKE starters included Tanner Carroll in a tie for 29th place (77), Will Boyd in 32nd (78) and Cody Walker with 82 strokes.
Cumberland had the advantage of having its two top golfers in a tie for first place, along with Michal Pospisil of Cumberlands and Frank Medale of Lindsey Wilson all carding a 70. Ryan Botts and Peyton Browles are the two Bulldogs players.
The tournament continued on Tuesday but results from the final round were unavailable at press time.
