PRESTONSBURG — Last Friday’s McTeacher’s Night fundraiser in conjunction with Prestonsburg Elementary School Thursday was a huge success.
It was standing-room-only in the North Lake Drive McDonald’s last Thursday night, as scores of people decended on the restaurant to help support McTeacher Night. A percentage of sales from the McTeacher’s Night fundraiser were donated to Prestonsburg Elementary school as a reward for their hard work.
PES Principal Brent Rose said that the school raised $9,500 during last Thursday’s event.
“We didn’t expect anything like that,” said Rose. “We were expecting maybe three of four thousand at the most.”
According to Rose, the Prestonsburg McDonald’s did just under $30,000 in business during the three hour event. The schools final tally was based off a percentage of those sales, combined with floor sales and tips.
The spokesperson from McDonalds told PES faculty during their briefing that no local school had ever received more than $1,900 from the event, said Rose, who added that he thought they could beat that number, but were surprised by the final result.
“They ran out of food,” Rose noted. “They had to go to another store to get things.”
Patrons were forced to park hundreds of yards away as a team of teachers and staff from Prestonsburg Elementary worked in the restaurant during the event, busily staffing different positions including front counter cashier and drive thru order presenter. McDonald’s employees also assisted the teachers with their new jobs.
Local McDonald’s owner/operators Bob and Tom Hutchison are supporters of education and work with several schools in the area on McTeacher’s Nights each year.
Rose said that Bob Hutchinson was trying to thank him for the tremendous sales during the event. “I was saying, ‘No, I need to thank you.’”
McDonald’s owner/operators throughout central and southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and southeastern Ohio donated over $23,000 to education during the 2012-13 school as a result of McTeacher’s Night fundraisers. Prestonsburg’s take Thursday night was nearly half that amount.
School officials interested in obtaining more information on scheduling such an event for an school are asked to visit their local McDonald’s and ask to speak to a manager about McTeacher’s Night.
