Bobcats roll past Phelps in Pike County Bowl

ROBINSON CREEK - Betsy Layne rolled in the Community Trust Bank Pike County Bowl on Friday, defeating former district rival Phelps 62-6.


The Bobcats moved out in front early and never faltered. Betsy Layne dominated its non-district opponent throughout the bowl matchup.


With the win, Betsy Layne opened the season 1-0. Phelps, which hosted Jenkins in a season-opened played in Week 0, dropped to 0-2.


“It was great being in the Pike County Bowl,” commented Betsy Layne Coach Jonathan Parsons. “Hopefully we were a good guest and will be invited back. The team has been working hard and improving each week.”


The Bobcats used a quick-strike offense to fend off Phelps.


Betsy Layne senior quarterback Dylan Hamilton completed five of six passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns.


Another Betsy Layne quarterback, Jordan Kendrick, connected on two of three passes for 17 yards and one touchdown.


Dustin Rogers led Betsy Layne in receiving, reeling in two catches for 44 yards and two touchdowns.


Blake Spencer added two catches for 39 yards and one touchdown.


Dylan Meade added a 12-yard scoring reception for the Bobcats.


Defensively for Betsy Layne, Bias and Rogers each had an interception. Kane Tackett recovered a fumble for the Bobcats.


Hall led Betsy Layne in tackles with a team-high six stops.


Chris Bias led Betsy Layne on the ground, rushing 10 times for 79 yards. Kane Tackett ranked second in rushing for the Bobcats, netting 29 yards via six carries.


Bias, Zach Bowens and Peyton Case also added one touchdown each for Betsy Layne in the lopsided victory.


Houston Hall rushed for a 27-yard touchdown for the Bobcats.


Betsy Layne will host Sheldon Clark in a home opener on Friday, Sept. 6. Kickoff for the Betsy Layne-Sheldon Clark game is set for 7:30 p.m.
