PRESTONSBURG — Drags racers from numerous states are headed back to Eastern Kentucky. The third annual fall edition of the Pop’s Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags will be held Friday and Saturday at Combs Airport on Rt. 321, between Prestonsburg and Paintsville. The Pop’s Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags, a local drag racing event which was featured as one of the “Top 5 Drag Strips” in the August 2013 edition of Hot Rod Magazine, attracts racers from throughout the nation.
The Pop’s Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags, under the direction of Arm Drop Guy Kent Rose, held its All Day Mayhem event in late-June.
In May, over two days, the spring edition of the 2013 Pop’s Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags attracted 235 drag cars to Combs Field Airport. Drag racers from as far away as California raced at the local event, which was the biggest yet.
“Even though we got rained out on Friday, the Arm Drop Nation turned out,” Rose said, following the May event. “The Arm Drop Nation is invincible. The Arm Drop Nation will rise and get stronger and stronger.”
Over 1,500 pit passes were sold for the Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags event held in May. The spring event attracted a huge crowd of drag racing fans from across Kentucky and numerous other states. Rose confirmed that the crowd for the two-day event was estimated to be close to 10,000.
Now, many of those same drivers, as well as newcomers to the Arm Drop Nation, are set to race between Paintsville and Prestonsburg at one of the nation’s top new drag strips.
Every driver in the Pop’s Chevrolet Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags must wear a DOT approved helmet. Classes for the fall event, dubbed Revenge of the Hillbillies, include Outlaw, Drag Radial Cage, Drag Radial No Cage, Street Tires and Front Wheel Drive.
Gates for the Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags will open at 9 a.m. on Friday. Racing is scheduled to be held until Saturday night.
Unemployed coal miners who present a layoff slip will be allowed to race free during the fall event.
