ROBINSON CREEK - Betsy Layne notched its second win in the 2013 high school volleyball season on Tuesday, defeating host Shelby Valley 2-0. The Ladycats prevailed 25-13, 26-24, 25-18.
Former 15th Region Champion Betsy Layne, under the direction of head coach Christina Crase, cruised in the opening game. The Ladycats, however, dropped a close second game. Betsy Layne used multiple spurts in the third game to claim the win.
Allie Meade led Betsy Layne with 10 kills. Cecelia Ray delivered seven kills for the Ladycats.
Ray recorded 15 services aces and Alex Hunter added 14 for the Betsy Layne volleyball team. Ray also had eight aces for Betsy Layne in the win.
Defensively, Ray added seven digs for the Ladycats. Kidd contributed nine blocks for the Betsy Layne volleyball team.
The Ladycats blanked Sheldon Clark 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-15) in a season-opener on Monday.
Betsy Layne is scheduled to visit Letcher County Central for a varsity match on Tuesday.
Prestonsburg, a high school volleyball squad under the direction of first-year head coach Jonni Raines, dropped its season opener to visiting Letcher County Central on Tuesday. Letcher County Central blanked the Lady Blackcats 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-12) in a game played at the Prestonsburg Fieldhouse.
South Floyd won its season-opener on Tuesday, shutting out Phelps 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-6).
Allen Central was hosting 58th District/Floyd County Conference foe Piarist School for a season-opener Thursday evening. The Allen Central-Piarist School volleyball match ended too late to make this edition.
Piarist School won its season-opener on Monday, defeating Pike County Central in a match played on the road.
