LOUISVILLE - Five Mid-South Conference football teams are ranked and another is receiving votes in the 2013 NAIA Football Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll, NAIA officials announced on Monday.
Georgetown (Ky.) leads the way for the Mid-South teams at No. 6 in the national poll while Cumberlands and Bethel are eighth and ninth respectively. No. 21 Belhaven (Miss.) and No. 25 Cumberland (Tenn.) complete the MSC teams in the Top-25.
Georgetown (10-1 last season) received 231 voting points from the panel of coaches that makes up the national raters. In July, conference officials announced that the Tigers were the preseason favorite to win the Mid-South East Division edging Cumberlands in the coaches’ vote.
Cumberlands (Ky.) (10-2) picked up 216 voting points in the national poll while Bethel (Tenn.) (9-4) garnered 181 voting points to give the MSC three teams in the preseason top-10.
Belhaven (6-5) picked up 65 voting points while Cumberland (8-3) collected 24 voting points from the national raters.
Bethel and Belhaven are co-favorites in the Mid-South West followed closely by Cumberland in the MSC coaches’ preseason poll.
Kentucky Christian (7-4) is one of eight teams outside the Top-25 but receiving votes. The Knights garnered nine voting points from the national raters.
Morningside (Iowa) is ranked No. 1 in the Top-25 with 280 voting points, including four first-place votes. Defending national champion Marian (Ind.) and Missouri Valley are tied at No. 2 with 267 voting points. Marian received eight first-place votes compared to Missouri Valley’s one first-place vote.
The Mid-South season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 29 as Pikeville (Ky.) travels to Morehead State (Ky.) and Cumberland heads to Tennessee Tech. Eight more games are slated for Saturday, Aug. 31.
