Powerful or powerless
I’m proud of Congressman Hal Rogers for having the courage to tell the truth, when it could very well damage his own standing in Eastern Kentucky. In his own words in a letter to the Floyd County Times this week, Rogers said, “In my economically-challenged district, there is no recovery in Inez or high-tech boom in Harlan.”
After 30 years of representation by Congressman Rogers, not only is our district “economically challenged,” it is one of the poorest in the entire country.
Is our Congressman aware that President Obama’s climate plan includes $9 billion to support clean coal technology, something local leaders, most notably Judge Executive Wayne T. Rutherford in Pike County, have been trying to get here for years? Clean coal could be a huge job creator for Eastern Kentucky and transform our region.
You can’t be a powerful Congressman and powerless against President Obama at the same time. You can’t have been successful at bringing jobs to our district and then use our district’s extreme poverty as leverage against your political opponents.
If you’re as powerful as you claim, then fix this. If you’re powerless, then we need a new representative.
