PRESTONSBURG - Jenny Wiley Theatre is pleased to announce the opening of The Sound of Music this Friday June 28 at 8:15 p.m. For the past few weeks, actors and orchestra have rehearsed, technicians have built, designers have overseen the final touches and the Box Office has been busy handling the ticket sales. It’s truly going to be a spectacular show. And there’s no better place to see and hear this production than in the beautiful setting of Jenny Wiley Theatre’s amphitheatre.

The Sound of Music is one of the most beloved musicals from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s collaboration, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Book, and Score. Based on the true story of Maria von Trapp, The Sound of Music follows a young woman who leaves her convent in Salzburg, Austria, to become governess for seven mischievous children of a retired naval captain. Set against the backdrop of the beginning of World War II, the free-spirited nun uses her love of music and generosity of spirit to free the von Trapp children from their heavily-disciplined lives. Maria’s sense of humor and adventure win the children over and eventually she and the widowed captain fall in love. The musical features classic songs including “My Favorite Things”, “Climb Every Mountain”, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”, “Edelweiss”, and “The Sound of Music”. The Sound of Music is the perfect family treat and proves to be both inspirational and heartwarming.
