PRESTONSBURG - Floyd County native Mike Slone is currently accepting area basketball players for the Mike Slone Next Level Academy. Slone, who played both on the college and professional levels prior to beginning his coaching career, will offer basketball instruction in Floyd County for $25 per hour.
Slone is set to be officially introduced as a new assistant coach on the Penn State New Kensington coaching staff. Previously, Slone was an assistant coach on the Cincinnati Christian College men’s basketball staff. During his time on the Cincinnati Christian College coaching staff, Slone recruited and helped to get signed several players who been recruited by NCAA Division I programs.
Slone, who played at Thomas More College, wants to help area players improve their skills.
“My goal is to help local kids learn the fundamentals of the game,” Slone said. “I want to help as many kids in the Eastern Kentucky area as possible. These kids have as much right to dream as anyone. Through my training, I hope to give them the confidence and knowledge they need in life to achieve their dreams, be better athletes and gain the knowledge they need to be successful in today’s struggling society.”
Slone will venture to Pennsylvania for his new coaching job later in the year. Now, however, he’s splitting his time between college coaching staff duties and providing instruction to area youth.
“I’ll always remember where I came from, so I want to give back to my community,” Slone added. “If I help one kid achieve their dreams then I’ve done my job.”
