Anna Sue Layne Clarke, widow of the late James Dempsey “J. D.” Clarke, went into the presence of Christ, May 14, 2013.
Her departure from this life was influenced by complications associated with dementia. She was under the care of Hospice of Huntington (W.Va.) and River’s Bend Health Care, of South Point, Ohio.
She was born Jan. 8, 1926, on Layne Bottom at Harold, to the late James Blaine and Ollie Hall Layne. She was raised there and, except for a short period of 10 years, lived most of her life there. For the most part she was a homemaker, but she had a few short-term jobs in the early part of her life.
During World War II she worked for a time as a tack welder at the Baltimore, Md., shipyards. She also worked at Pikeville, in a photo studio, Hobbs Dime Store, Dawahares and Harold Grocery Store as a sales clerk. She was an outstanding cook, seamstress, and arts and craftsperson. She wrote a number of poems in which she reflected on her family and her life on Layne Bottom. Some of the poems are published under the title, “Special Thoughts and Loving Memories.” She was a member of New Salem Church of Old Regular Baptist.
She is survived by a son, Gary Edison Clarke (Beverly), of South Point, Ohio; two grandchildren, Christopher Allen Clarke (Marisa), of Huntington, W.Va., and Jennifer Leigh Clarke Duncan (Scott), of South Point, Ohio; and seven great grandchildren, Benjamin Scott Duncan, Anna Kate Duncan, Jonathan David Duncan, Taylor Shae’ Clarke, Erin Nicole Clarke, Karley Abigail Clarke and Colton James Clarke. She is also survived by one step great-grandchild, Justin Tyler Childers; a sister, Lucille Maureen Layne Craft, of Russell; and many nephews and nieces.
Services will be held at Hall Brothers Funeral Home, in Martin. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, May 17. The New Salem Church of Old Regular Baptists will have a memorial service Friday from 8 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m., officiated by Gary Clarke and assisted by Scott Duncan, Associate Pastor of River Cities Community Church, of Huntington, W.Va. Visitation will also be held at 10 a.m., prior to the funeral.
