PRESTONSBURG - Alex Garner is a college football player and a big part of his summer break will consist of offseason workouts in preparation for the 2013 season. A Prestonsburg High School graduate, Garner returned home last week. Home for the summer, Garner continues to go through workouts following his freshman season with the Emory & Henry College football team.
The former Prestonsburg High School standout enjoyed a solid spring season with his college team. Garner is a defensive lineman for the Wasps and went through his first set of spring practices with the team earlier in the year.
“Spring practice went really well,” Garner said. “The team really got better offensively as a whole. It was my first spring with the team and all cylinders were clicking.”
A defensive end, Garner could also slide down the line and play nose tackle for the Emory & Henry football team.
“Right now, I’m at 240 pounds and the coaches want me to get to 245 or 250,” Garner confided.
Currently, Garner is playing behind a senior at defensive end. A senior and a junior are listed in front of Garner at the nose tackle position on the Emory & Henry football team’s depth chart.
Scheme-wise, Emory & Henry had been running a 3-4 defense. According to Garner, E&H is now running a 4-3 defense as well.
Garner will be home for over three months. But that doesn’t mean it’s all fun and sun for the college student-athlete. He’ll be working out throughout the summer. Garner is due back at Emory & Henry College August 15.
