KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Shawnee State University scored two in the first and added a pair of four-run frames to eliminate the University of Pikeville 10-2 in the 2013 Mid-South Conference softball tournament on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Bears finished the 2013 season with a record of 20-27.
Shawnee State scored its first run on a double steal, and added another in the first when Holly Brabson tripled to right field.
In the fourth, SSU went up 6-0 with a pair of two-run home runs. The first was by shortstop Kristi Yates, followed by a blast off the bat of third baseman Hannah Dittoe.
After Shawnee State added four in the top of the sixth, UPike got on the scoreboard before its season came to an end.
Second baseman Emily Castle and pitcher Kayla Morgan had one-out singles, first baseman Courtney Morgan doubled to score Castle. Kayla Morgan scored when left fielder Jordyn Hale singled to right field.
Pikeville had nine hits in the game, with Courtney Morgan and Sarah Kinney, who had two hits, having doubles.
Kayla Morgan had three singles in her final game, while Castle joined Kinney with two hits.
Courtney Patrick was the pitcher of record for the Bears, going the first 2-2/3. Kayla Morgan pitched the final 3-1/3.
