LOUISVILLE – He began the week with a save and ended it with wins on consecutive games against Mid-South Conference competition.
On Monday, Pikeville junior Corey Gilligan was named the league’s pitcher of the week.
He was honored along with Georgetown’s Ryan Serrato, who was named the Mid-South Conference Baseball Player of the Week.
Both Serrato and Gilligan earn their first conference weekly awards of their careers.
Gilligan won twice and added a save in three appearances for the Bears last week.
The Las Vegas, Nevada, junior did not allow an earned run in his 11 innings while striking out seven batters.
After opening the week with a save, Gilligan pitched the 10th inning in a 3-2 win over Shawnee State for his first win of the week. The next day, Gilligan earned a complete-game win while allowing a pair of unearned runs on eight hits in an 8-2 victory over Shawnee State.
Gilligan helped the Bears record a 4-1 week to improve to 17-22-1 overall and 6-12 in the MSC.
Serrato amassed a .556 (10-for-18) batting average last week while producing a pair of two-hit games and two three-hit games for the Tigers. He also scored two runs in each of the Tigers’ four games last week.
The sophomore, who hails from Whittier, Calif., added a double, a home run and four RBIs to his tally last week while producing an .889 slugging percentage as the Tigers won three out of four, including a three-game sweep of Bluefield.
The Tigers improve to 28-14 overall and 15-6 in the Mid-South following last week’s play.
The next baseball players of the week awards will be announced on Monday, April 22.
