Handshoe leads Rebels past Phelps

PAINTSVILLE - Junior pitcher Junior Handshoe registered 16 strikeouts on Friday evening, pitching Allen Central to a 5-2 win over Phelps in the 15th Region All “A” Classic semifinals at Charlie Adkins Field.


Allen Central won its third straight game, moving to 7-3. The Rebels reached the 15th Region All “A” Classic semifinals after defeating Floyd County foe Betsy Layne 8-2.


Phelps dropped to 3-7 after suffering the loss. The Hornets had defeated Sheldon Clark 6-4 to advance to the semifinals of the regional small-school tournament.


Handshoe allowed two runs on four hits. The Allen Central starting pitcher tossed a complete game. He threw 20 first pitch strikes.


Allen Central plated five runs on eight hits in the tournament game.


Dustin Johnson led the Allen Central offense with two hits.


The Rebels also fared well defensively, only committing on error.


Allen Central scored first, pushing across one run in the top half of the first inning.


The Rebels led 2-0 before Phelps, the home team on the scoreboard, scored its first run in the bottom half of the third inning.


Allen Central added two more runs in the sixth inning and scored one last time in the seventh.


Phelps plated its final run in the sixth inning.


Zack Avina led the Phelps offensive with two hits.


Phelps committed three errors in the loss.


Allen Central advanced to play 58th District foe Prestonsburg in the 15th Region All “A” Classic championship game
