Sheriff should resign

Times Staff Report

March 21, 2013

With the arrest of Floyd County Sheriff John K Blackburn for DUI, Sheriff Blackburn should immediately resign as the president of the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association and the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Blackburn was arrested in Powell County by a Stanton City Police Officer while driving a county official car, under the influence of alcohol, returning from a casino. Sheriff Blackburn was reported in the TV media to blowing a .202 on a breath testing machine, which is nearly three times the legal limit in Kentucky.

This incident is a clear violation of the public trust and Floyd County should move swiftly to address this incident. I realize everybody is innocent until proven guilty and they deserve their day in court but elected county officials need to be held to a higher standard.

I wonder what Sheriff Blackburn’s reaction would have been if one of his deputies were arrested in another county driving a county car under the influence of alcohol returning from a casino? If I had to guess, the offending deputy would be dismissed immediately. So why the citizens of Floyd County shouldn’t ask for and demand Sheriff Blackburn’s removal from office is beyond me.
