PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – No. 12 Pikeville built a 25-point second half lead and cruised to a 72-52 win over Shawnee State on Saturday afternoon at Waller Gymnasium.
Pikeville had three players in double figures as it improved to 23-5 on the season with its fourth straight win. The Bears are now 14-5 in the league with only Monday’s game at U.Va.-Wise remaining on the regular-season schedule.
Pikeville led 37-23 at the half but sizzled out of the gate, hitting 7-of-12 from the field to outscore Shawnee State 19-8 to build a 56-31 lead.
Shawnee State (16-12, 11-8) cut the lead to 15 late in the half but could get no closer.
Pikeville finished the game at 44.3 percent overall and 25 percent from the arc. The Bears did sink 13-of-18 (72.2 percent) from the line.
They won by holding Shawnee State to 32.3 percent shooting, including 24 percent on three-point shots.
Senior Trevor Setty recorded his eighth double-double of season and his third in as many games with 17 points and 14 rebounds. The Maysville product, No. 9 on the all-time scoring list, also had four steals, two assists and two blocked shots.
Senior Jamar Briscoe led the Bears with 24 points and also pulled down six rebounds with three assists and two steals. Senior post Terrance Saintil flipped in 10 while pulling down five rebounds.
Shawnee State had two players in double figures, led by senior Tyler Morgan’s 18 points and nine rebounds. Senior Jeremy Bennington added 14 and led his team with three assists.
