WISE, Va. – No. 12 University of Pikeville outscored U.Va.-Wise outscored U.Va.-Wise 54-18 in the second half and turned a one-point game into an 85-48 decision Monday night.
Pikeville will be seeded No. 2 in the Mid-South Conference tournament on Friday, playing at 6 p.m. against St. Catharine College at the Frankfort Civic Center. The Bears will head to the postseason 24-5 overall, finishing the regular season 15-5 in the league.
The win gave the Bears five straight to end the regular season, all against Mid-South Conference competition.
U.Va.-Wise (11-14, 7-13) will be the eight seed and play top-seeded Lindsey Wilson on Friday at 2 p.m.
The first-half was tied six times, and when senior Jermaine Wright sank his second of two free throws with 25 seconds left in the half, the Cavs led 30-29. The Bears brought the ball downcourt and found junior P.J. Jenkins for a 15-foot baseline jumper, putting them on top 31-30 at the half.
That bucket keyed a 12-0 start to the second half that bled into a rout. By the 7:00 mark after senior Trevor Setty sank a three, the Bears had outscored the Cavs 37-8 to start the half and led 68-38.
In the second half, the Bears were 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) from the arc.
Setty led all scorers with 22 points and his 10 rebounds gave him four straight double-doubles to end the season. Senior post Terrance Saintil finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Jamar Briscoe followed with 13 while Jenkins tossed in 10 in only five minutes of play.
Senior guard Chris Johnson scored seven with eight assists and five rebounds.
Only one Cav reached double figures, as sophomore Tyler Maggard had 12, all in the first half. Junior Deon Boyce scored nine but pulled down 16 rebounds and handed out four assists.
Pikeville won the rebounding battle 49-46 and forced 19 Cavalier turnovers.
