PIKEVILLE – Wins over a team ranked third in the country and another receiving votes pushed the University of Pikeville up five places in the latest NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches Top 25 Poll, released Tuesday by the national office in Kansas City.
The Bears are ranked 12th in the country this week.
Pikeville, 21-5, picked up a 95-87 win over then-No. 3 Lindsey Wilson College last Thursday and followed it up on Saturday with a 77-75 win over Campbellsville University, which also received votes in last week’s poll.
While the Bears moved up after their week the Blue Raiders’ third loss of the season cost them only one spot in the poll, as Lindsey Wilson landed at No. 4 with a 24-3.
The other ranked Mid-South Conference team, Georgetown College, remained essentially the same this week. The Tigers went from 13th to tied for that slot after a 1-1 worksheet last week.
Pikeville’s Saturday opponent, Shawnee State, and Campbellsville continued getting votes in this week’s poll, but not enough to crack the Top 25.
Columbia, Mo., remains the only unbeaten team in the country and is atop the poll unanimously. The 28-0 Cougars have only two games between them an unbeaten regular season – Wednesday’s contest against Harris-Stowe State (5-23) and a Saturday-afternoon contest at 12-15 William Woods (Mo.).
Columbia beat Harris-Stowe 93-49 on the road and William Woods 73-53 at home in late January.
Lee, Tenn., is second again at 25-1. John Brown (Ark.) is 24-4 and moved to third. Lindsey is followed by Lewis-Clark State in fifth.
Cal State San Marcos, SAGU (Texas), Westmont (Calif.), Oklahoma Baptist and Evangel, Mo., round out the Top 10.
Pikeville will complete the regular season with three road games in a five-day span. It begins Thursday at Rio Grande in the second game of a doubleheader, set for an 8 p.m. tipoff. Saturday the Bears face Shawnee State at 4 p.m., with the regular-season finale at U.Va.-Wise on Monday at 8 p.m.
