PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville women’s basketball team lost a tough one Saturday afternoon at the East Kentucky Expo Center, falling 72-58 to No. 7 Cumberland University.
The Bulldogs, 16-1 overall and 7-1 in the Mid-South Conference, did most of their damage off the glass, outrebounding the Bears 46-25. The key figure in this statistical advantage was junior guard TaCouya Allen, who hustled for 10 rebounds on top of 19 points to pace the Bulldogs.
Senior forward Jessica Pace did well clearing out space underneath the basket, and was able to put up 17 points as well as pull down six rebounds. Junior guard Cassie Cowan came off the bench to provide an offensive spark to the Bulldogs with 16 points.
Sophomore guard Christin Haney managed to lead the Bears (5-10, 1-5 in the Mid-South Conference) in scoring despite coming off the bench. Haney finished with 10 points and three assists.
Sophomore forward Peyton Wright, junior forward Brogan Conley and sophomore forward Whitney Jackson each added eight for the Bears, who rotated often enough that nine players received 10 or more minutes.
The Bears’ next matchup will be Thursday evening at 6 p.m. when they welcome St. Catharine College to the Expo Center.
