PIKEVILLE - The Betsy Layne Ladycats fell to Paintsville in the opening round of the Girls’ 15th Region All “A” Classic on Saturday at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center. Paintsville outscored Betsy Layne 12-8 in the fourth quarter to win 44-40.
The Lady Tigers improved to 9-6, advancing to meet Shelby Valley on Jan. 15.
With the loss, Betsy Layne dropped to 9-6.
Shelby Carroll paced Paintsville with a game-high 17 points. Carroll was the only Paintsville scorer to reach double figures.
Kerrigan Samons and Anna Keeton finished just outside of double figures, adding eight points apiece for the Lady Tigers.
The two 15th Region girls’ basketball teams swapped leads throughout the contest.
Betsy Layne thrived early, outscoring Paintsville 12-7 in the opening quarter. The Ladycats, however, faced a deficit at the break. Paintsville took a hard-fought 20-18 lead into the intermission period.
The two longtime rivals were tied 32-32 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
Paintsville was five-of-10 from the free throw line. The Lady Tigers connected on three 3-point field goal attempts.
Madison Trimble and Anna Claire Rice tossed in four points apiece and Andria Hansford added three for the Lady Tigers.
Paige Watkins paced Betsy Layne with a game-high 16 points. Chloe Johnson joined Watkins in double figures, adding 10 points for the Ladycats.
Brandy Morrow narrowly missed double figures, finishing with nine points for Betsy Layne in the loss.
Kelsi Tackett (two points), Kayce Tackett (two points) and T.J. Tackett 9one point) also provided scoring for the Ladycats.
Betsy Layne also drained half of its free throw attempts, finishing six-for12.
