What things has God spoken to you about recently? The first recorded time God spoke with man is found in Genesis chapter 2 verses 16 and 17. And the earliest account of God speaking to a woman is in Genesis chapter 3, verse 13. Each time I consider the words of Nehemiah 9:6…I am reminded of how great God is and I find myself overwhelmed that He still takes the time to speak to us. “You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.”
God has many ways of speaking to us. The primary way God talks to us is through His Word. However God also speaks to us through people, nature, circumstances, visions, and dreams. Though I have never heard the audible voice of God it too is another way He speaks. Most of the time when God speaks to me, it is through His Word or a still, small inner voice. Occasionally God speaks to me through visions. Certainly there are other ways that God speaks. Since God is not limited in how He speaks, we can be assured He knows the very best way to communicate One-to-one with each individual person. Here is this week’s story…
Driving home in the early morning hours I was mesmerized by the sight of the sky as a canvas magnificently stroked with colors of orange, pink, yellow, lavender, and blue. Completely enthralled by the beauty of the dawning morning I found it rather difficult to keep my eyes focused on the highway. For sure, it was the most beautiful sunrise I had ever witnessed, truly a work of art from the Master’s hand.
As I continued driving and enjoying the spectacular display of colors I began rejoicing and thanking God for the beauty He had created. After thanking Him for the sunrise, I exuberantly declared: “God, thank You for listening to me. And God I thank You that no matter what time of the day or night…you never turn me away. You always listen. Yet more importantly Lord; I thank You for speaking to me.” And then in closing: “God, I’m so very thankful You are alive.”
Immediately the LORD responded to my comment by asking in a still, small inner voice: “How do you know I’m alive?” Loudly I exclaimed, “Because You live in my heart!” I must say, I was somewhat startled with how quickly I had responded to God’s question. “Perhaps I should have given more thought before responding;” I chided myself. Yet I reminded myself that my spontaneous response had come from the depths of my heart, and that knowledge brought comfort to me.
Straight away the LORD reminded me of the hymn “He Lives.” To the best of my memory I had not recalled or sung the hymn in many years. At first I couldn’t remember the lyrics so I began humming the melody of the song. After several minutes of humming, I was finally able to recall the lyrics to the hymn’s chorus. So I began singing. As I sung the last sentence in the hymn’s chorus…hot tears sprung to my eyes as once again my heart spilled over with love and admiration toward God.
As you read the following words to the chorus of “He Lives” keep in mind my response to God’s question…“How do you know I’m alive?”
“He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today.
He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.
He lives. He lives. Salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives. He lives within my heart.”
(Alfred H. Ackley 1887-1960)
I pray that you are encouraged and assured with the knowledge that just as God talked with Adam and Eve…He continues to talk to men, women, boys and girls in the year 2012. Through His Son Jesus Christ, and the power of His Holy Spirit, God desires to speak to you One-to-one every day. If Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior and it’s been a while since you’ve heard His Voice, perhaps you’re too busy doing other things to hear God. Or perhaps there is sin in your life. Either way, I hope you’ll find a quiet place and get alone with God. Because just one word from God can change your life forever!
