Billy Ray Burchett, 85, of Prestonsburg, widower of Shelby Rowe, passed away Sept. 26, 2012.
He was born Dec. 21, 1926, on Lower Johns Creek, the son of the late Anna Wells Burchett and W.L. Burchett. After graduating from Auxier High School, he was drafted into the military, where he served in World War II. After returning from the service, he entered Eastern Kentucky University, in Richmond, where he received a degree in accounting. Following graduation, he re-entered the military and served as an officer in the Korean War, eventually leaving the military with a rank of major.
Upon returning to Prestonsburg, he married Shelby Jean Rowe, of Pikeville, and they moved to Columbus, Ohio, where Bill was employed as a tax accountant with Columbia Gas System until his retirement in 1992. In 1989, Shelby passed away and Bill moved back to Prestonsburg.
One of Bill’s favorite pasttimes was playing golf. He played many, many rounds with family and friends and Jenny Wiley and Stonecrest.
He was a lifetime member of Columbus Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by a brother, Robert L. Burchett (wife Roslyn), of Prestonsburg; and Orella McGuire (husband Tom), of Prestonsburg; three nephews; and one niece.
Services were held Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Carter Funeral Home, with Tommy Reed officiating. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery, in Prestonsburg.
