OWENTON — A Martin woman is dead after police say she was accidentally shot with a crossbow.

Yvetta Reffitt, 59, was hunting with a group Sunday at a farm in Owen County. Police say she was dropped off by herself at 6:45 a.m. When she did not show up for lunch, members of her hunting party began looking for her.

Reffitt was already dead when she was found at 11:30 a.m.

A preliminary police investigation points to the crossbow shot, along with a pre-existing medical condition, as being responsible for Reffitt’s death.

Det. Kurt Buhts, with Kentucky State Police Post 5, in Campbellsburg, is investigating the incident.

Buhts was assisted at the scene by the Owen County Sheriff’s Department, Owen County EMS, Owen County Rescue and the Monterey Fire Department.
