PRESTONSBURG — Members of Eastern Kentucky Chapter of Brothers of The Wheel spent Black Friday taking advantage of the increased traffic flow in Prestonsburg to collect money for their sixth annual Christmas for needy children.
It's true that almost everyone makes assumptions about people based on their appearances and, at first glance, you wouldn't guess that these rough looking bikers wearing Santa hats were actually doing something meaningful for the kids in their community. The old saying "looks can be deceiving" holds true to this chapter of motorcycle enthusiasts who choose to spend their day after Thanksgiving giving a little bit more.
Members want to make sure that every needy child in the county gets something for Christmas, being that to many kids Christmas is just another day of the year. They enlist the help of the Floyd County Board of Education and local Family Resource Centers to provide them with the names of children who are in need the most.
BOTW members collect donations which are then used to purchase a new pair of shoes for each child. Santa even makes a special stop at each of the children's houses to personally ask them what they would like for Christmas and then members go out and try to find whatever the request may be.
"I had a lady tell me that she's glad that there are people out there who still care," said a BOTW member who only identified himself as "Wolfman."
Not only do they contribute to the local area, but they also conduct events in five other states. BOTW President Todd Caudill says he's just glad they are able to give back to the community.
